This client needed to upgrade their existing data center chiller plant and chilled water distribution system in order to meet the planned growth of their data center while reducing energy and water usage. PEDCO was challenged to provide environmentally “friendly” design for the data center as well as keep it operational. Upgrades included replacing the chiller plant with new equipment – two 400-ton water cooled centrifugal chillers, one 300-ton air cooled chiller, three cooling tower cells, three chilled water pumps, three condenser water pumps, three plate and frame heat exchangers, and ancillary water treatment equipment.

In the data center, 32 computer room air conditioning (CRAC) units were replaced with units that included both chilled water and refrigerant cooling coils and compressors with rooftop condensers. The entire control system for the data center was replaced and optimizes the chiller plant operations.

New Call Center

PEDCO was selected to provide complete mechanical and electrical engineering and plumbing design for the TI fit-out of this 216,000 SF call center building on a new commercial development site. This building is the first in the client’s portfolio in the Albuquerque area. Design included a full-service kitchen and dining area and an employee fitness center.

This project was undertaken with a demanding and accelerated design and construction schedule as part of the planned growth in their business, including a temporary space and a short-term partnership with the University of New Mexico.  For this project, PEDCO provided the following deliverables: Core & Shell performance specification, TI schematic design, TI design development, TI construction documents, TI LEED® documentation, and TI commissioning documentation.

Kroger Data Center

PEDCO provided engineering design services for the upgrade of the Kroger Tier III Data Center in Cincinnati, Ohio originally constructed in 1978. The upgrades resulted in a high availability data center while also being highly efficient from a mechanical and electrical perspective. The mechanical design included a new scalable central chilled water system with multi-stacked chillers and free coolers feeding chilled water CRAC units with variable airflow. Electrical design included a second 2500kVA, self-contained, outdoor, stand-by generator and the extension of the electrical distribution system.

Other miscellaneous improvements included new Liebert iCOM controls and Liebert Site Scan monitoring, expansion of the existing DDC system, a new Emergency Power Off (EPO) system, updated lighting and controls, added under floor leak detection system, and upgraded fire alarm system. The design resulted in Kroger obtaining a $130,000 incentive check from the Duke Energy Smart $aver program and a measured savings of over $100,000 in utility bills during the first year of operation.
