UC Clifton Court Hall

The University of Cincinnati (UC) is actively working on the design and construction of a new 180,000 GSF academic building for several departments in the College of Arts and Sciences. PEDCO is providing Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) design engineer services for this new building and KZF is providing the Architectural and Civil design. The purpose of this project is to combine a variety of departments and functions and needs to identify creative and efficient use of spaces and resources, encourage multidisciplinary collaboration, and provide flexibility to rapidly changing and evolving co-curricular opportunities.

The site occupies a prominent location at a campus intersection that is a major point-of-entry for pedestrians entering campus, for access to campus parking, and for servicing of adjacent buildings. This creates a complex dynamic and the building and site work will aid in funneling pedestrians toward other buildings in this zone of campus and allow for a future project to realign Clifton Court Drive to relieve the congestion in the area.

The building will use primary/secondary pumping and be tied into the campus utilities distributed underground from the central utility plant. Goal for this project is to achieve LEED Silver Certification.

BIM B360 will be utilized to provide a high level of coordination as well as allow real time collaboration in a cloud-based Revit model.

Ball State University – North Quad Building

PEDCO was selected the Engineering Consultant for a remodel and replacement of the Mechanical and Electrical Systems for the 126,000 SF North Quad Building. A requirement for Ball State and a key challenge for PEDCO, was designing the new systems so that two-thirds of the existing building could remain open for classes throughout the construction period. PEDCO successfully met this challenge by designing all the new systems (electrical power, fire protection, air handling, domestic water, sanitary piping, storm piping, chilled water piping, steam and hot water) such that they flowed in the opposite direction from the existing utilities. This allowed the existing utilities to remain in service and brought off-line as the new systems were placed into service. By doing so, the building down time was reduced to manageable segments to allow continued operation of the building.

Some additional features of the design include: a new HVAC system consisting of a dedicated outdoor air handling unit for each phase, tied to fan coil units for each space to help reduce overall energy use in the system; heating system designed for 150º F to allow for a future connection to a proposed campus geothermal loop; electrical service divided up to allow monitoring of power usage for HVAC users separate from the lighting and plug loads.

University of Kentucky Haggin Hall Student Housing

PEDCO provided plumbing design of Haggin Hall Student Housing at the University of Kentucky as part of a design-build team. Project design included sanitary, storm, and domestic water design. The facility was constructed due to the need for additional student housing at the University as well as revitalizing the core of campus.  The 5-story, 154,000 SF dormitory consists of 12,000 SF for dining, additional multipurpose rooms, and classrooms. The dorm has 396 beds (163 units) single- and double-occupancy all private bedrooms.   This project achieved LEED Silver and included geothermal heating and cooling.

UC Lindner College of Business

Due to exceptional growth in enrollment and the condition of their aging facilities, the University of Cincinnati’s Lindner College of Business required a new building on UC’s Uptown west campus. PEDCO provided MEP engineering design for this new 225,000 SF facility which was completed in 2019. The design team produced a unique and provocative design that fulfills the building’s extensive project requirements and leverages the site’s assets.

The new facility is functionally and visually critical to the continued success of both Main Street and Campus Green master planning implemented over the past three decades. It serves to connect both recreational and academic open spaces and structures that are carefully woven into the heart of the West Campus. This site is adjacent to numerous iconic buildings and public spaces which is driving the high degree of planning, design and construction. This project achieved LEED Gold Certification.
